Monterey is a small peninsula on the central California coast, home to the Naval Postgraduate School and the Defense Language Institute — a national-security schools cluster most people don't expect to find next to Cannery Row and a marine-science and preservation economy built around the bay. Laguna Seca's racetrack and the fact that TED itself started there add to a place that's genuinely several different things at once, none of them the obvious "beach town" read.
