Horace Mann called public education "the great equalizer." Even in Fairfax County and Palo Alto -- some of the best-funded, highest-ranked public school systems in the country -- money still buys a materially different version of it. That's not a partisan story. Everyone does it, across the entire spectrum. Which is exactly why it's a real, structural betrayal of the one specifically American promise the whole system was built to keep.
