South Jersey Had a Real Identity for a Century Before Atlantic City Ever Had a Casino
New Jersey has been called "the Garden State" since 1862, describing real produce-farming soil -- fourteen years before the speech usually credited with coining it. Cranberry bogs, the world's first boardwalk, and a rodeo running since 1955 all predate Atlantic City's first legal casino, which didn't open until 1978.
