Alaska's economy runs through Anchorage regardless of where the actual work happens. The oil and gas industry's corporate offices sit there even though extraction happens hundreds of miles north -- Alyeska Pipeline Service Company, which has operated the Trans-Alaska Pipeline since 1970, is headquartered in Anchorage, and the sector accounts for a disproportionate share of the state's wages even though it's a small share of direct employment. Alaska Native regional corporations are real economic institutions in their own right, not just cultural ones: Arctic Slope Regional Corporation, headquartered in Utqiagvik with administrative offices in Anchorage, is one of the largest Alaska Native-owned corporations, running businesses across the state's North Slope. The military is a third real anchor -- Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson alone is drawing a planned $2 billion investment and 2,700 new personnel, even as broader federal employment in the state has fallen 8.4% year over year. The University of Alaska system, split between Anchorage and Fairbanks, is the research and workforce anchor underneath all three.
