The Research Triangle is named for the geographic triangle formed by three major research universities — Duke, UNC Chapel Hill, and NC State — and Research Triangle Park itself, founded in 1959, was one of the first planned research parks in the country. Its life-sciences and biotech density comes from three distinct university research cultures feeding one regional economy, not a single dominant school.
